Milton Stephen McDowell

Milton Stephen McDowell, age 72, of Simpsonville, SC passed away December 31, 2012 at his residence.

Born August 8, 1940, he was the husband of Kathleen M. McDowell and the son of the late Milton Calvin McDowell and the late Frieda Thelma McDowell.

Steve was a retired Third Party Administrator and owner of The McDowell Agency and the Ed Brashier Agency, a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters; Lisa Younts of Simpsonville, Elizabeth Renee Allspach and her husband Adam of Florida, and Dina Bittermann and her husband James of Washington; son Steven Scott McDowell and his wife Dana of Simpsonville; nine grandchildren, Olive Jane Berley, Hartford McDowell Berley, Tiffani Renee Allspach, Jake Scott McDowell, Abigail Mae McDowell, Joseph Dalton Younts, Martin Luke Younts, Nicholas Bittermann, and Joseph Bittermann; brothers Ronald McDowell and Douglas McDowell; sisters Judith Callahan, Pamela Hampton, Roberta McCray, Jana McDowell and Bonnie Colleen Webber. He was predeceased by one brother Michael McDowell.

He was appointed by Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. to the South Carolina State Health Planning Committee in 1992 and served on the South Carolina Health Care Cost Containment Study Committee from 1988-1990 under Senator Selvey. He was a past member of Society of Professional Benefit Administrators. From 1992-1996, he was a member of Guardian Advisory Council of National Federation of Independent Business. Appointed to the Greenville Hospital System Foundation in 1992, he was the Secretary-Treasurer in 1997. He was also a Trustee of the Greenville Hospital System for a six-year term and served as Chairman in 1990 and 1991.

As a member of the Greater Greenville Life Underwriters Association, he was Chairman S.C. Life Underwriters Political Action Committee and a Board Member of LUPAC President. During his six-year term, he served all chairs of this Association including Chairman of the Planning & Development Committee, Vice President of Western Region and Chairman of Health Insurance Activities.

In the 1980’s, he was involved with the Greenville County Youth Orchestra where his positions included Past Chairman Steering Committee, President 1984-1985 and Past President in 1985-1986. Throughout his adult life, his involvement within the community, both in Greenville and Simpsonville, included Past Commissioner of Greenville County Emergency Medical Service-Vice Chairman, past board member of the South Carolina Advisory Board of Greenville Hospital System and past board member of the Simpsonville Chamber of Commerce. He served five years on the Simpsonville City Council and held positions of Chairman of Budget, Finance & Personal Committee and past Chairman City of Simpsonville Planning and Zoning Committee. His achievements also included past board member of Greenville Estate Planning Council, Blue Ridge Mountain Resort Property Owners Association Board from 2006-2008 and served on the Board for the balance of 2009, 2010 and 2011. He was also a member of Simpsonville Masonic Lodge No. 311, Scottish Rite Free Mason 32nd degree.

The family will receive friends at Heritage Funeral Home from 7 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. The service will be held at Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 2:00 pm. The entombment will follow the service at Graceland East Memorial Park in Simpsonville, SC.
