J. Harris Campbell, Sr.

Mr. J. Harris Campbell, Sr., age 88, passed away on December 5, 2016 at his home. He was born on June 25, 1928 in Anderson, SC to Leslie S. Campbell and Biddie Lee Robinson Campbell.

After graduating from high school, Harris served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked for many years in the banking industry. He was a visionary and an entrepreneur in a variety of businesses, the most successful and long running being Boone Rentals, Inc. in Boone, NC. He helped to develop a rental education program at Appalachian State University. He was a founding member and past president of the Carolinas Rental Association. He belonged to a variety of service organizations such as Rotary Club and Optimist Club.

Harris was a member of Holly Ridge Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Harris was a committed believer in Jesus Christ. He shared the love of Christ with others at home and abroad through his generosity, his service with the Gideons and on ministry trips to Brazil, Honduras, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

Harris is survived by his wife, Virginia Campbell; daughter, Leslie Sullivan (Chris); son, John H. Campbell Jr. (Shelly); stepson, Tim Barnwell (Cathy); stepson, Joey Knight; brother, Don Campbell (Ruth); sister, Betty Jean Cicero. He is also survived by grandchildren Hollie Stanbery (Adam), Jimmy Council, Richard Campbell (Taylor), Ryan Campbell, Callie Gibson (Greg), and Chelsey (Justin); great grandchildren Rylee Council, Ellie Stanbery and Jaxon Stanbery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Ruby B. Campbell; his sister, Evelyn Stidham; his brother, Doug Campbell; and his step-daughter, Debbie Knight.

A memorial service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Thursday, December 8 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Josh Culbertson officiating. Visitation will follow the ceremony.
